For Immediate Release:
The V-Day Greensboro’s 2011 production of The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler at the Open Space Cafe Theatre to benefit a local domestic violence prevention center is not your average performance — this year, it’s just a little bit different.
Every year around this time, sometime between February and March, V-Day productions of Eve Ensler’s plays appear in various locations. Perhaps you’ve been to one, and so you think: been there, done that. It’s true some things will be familiar about this production but there are some big differences too.
Among the things that you will recognize: this is an all volunteer cast and production crew giving up their time and effort to benefit a local foundation. The proceeds from V-Day Greensboro 2011 will benefit the Sherri Denese Jackson Foundation, whose mission is to prevent domestic violence through education and community awareness by offering prevention and intervention programs.
Most of the monologues remain the same with the exception of an additional optional monologue, “Say It,” and this year’s final spotlight piece, “Myriam.” A tribute to Myriam Merlet an activist and author who fought for women’s rights in Haiti before her death in the earthquake there.
Different from other productions: the eleven member cast works as an ensemble sharing many of the monologues and creating the environments of the various locations. And most notably different, the cast members will be performing the pieces in and around the audience. There will be no separation between the audience and the actresses.
Why the differences? In the spirit of liberatory education and theater, to experience is to know. And though these monologues are the stories of a few specific women, the power of their truth is that many women share the same experiences. It is not someone else’s story but our stories collectively. So, to emphasize that each story is shared by many women, more than one woman performs many of the monologues. To emphasize that there is no division between the characters on stage and the audience, the actors will be among the audience.
Sound interesting and scary? We think so too. Come join us and be apart of it. Help us to raise funds and awareness to end violence against women and girls.
